چکیده
Supplementary Figure 1. Proteorhodopsin amino acid sequence alignment. Multiple alignment of the predicted aminoacid sequences of PR in Dokdonia sp. MED134 and Polaribacter sp. MED152 compared to tentative Bacteroidetes orthologs and SAR86 and P. ubique sequences. Predicted transmembrane regions are marked by boxes with solid lines. Gray shading indicates conserved amino acid positions. Key amino acids for PR functionality are marked by colours: Asp97 and Glu108 in yellow, Met, Leu or Gln at position 105 in red, and Lys230 in light blue (SAR86 eBAC31A08 numbering). Amino acid positions predicted to be part of the retinal binding pocket are marked by arrows. Accession numbers and phylogenetic relationships of the sequences are presented in Fig. 2. Amino acid sequences were aligned using Clustal W. Predicted transmembrane regions were identified using TMpred, based on a statistical analysis of TMbase. The Light-Driven Proton Pump Proteorhodopsin Enhances Bacterial Survival during Tough Times
Some microorganisms contain proteins that can interact with light and convert it into energy for growth and survival, or into sensory information that guides cells towards or away from light. The simplest energy-harvesting photoproteins are the rhodopsins, which consist of a single, membrane-embedded protein covalently bound to the chromophore retinal (a light-sensitive pigment) [1]. One class ...
متن کاملDiversity and functional analysis of light‐driven pumping rhodopsins in marine Flavobacteria
The aims of this study are the description of diversity for proteorhodopsin (PR)-containing flavobacteria in marine environments, the finding of novel photoreceptive membrane proteins, and the elucidation of the effect of light on the growth of three rhodopsin genes containing flavobacterium. We investigated novel sodium ion rhodopsin (NaR) and halorhodopsin (HR) genes from PR-containing flavob...
متن کاملGenome analysis of the proteorhodopsin-containing marine bacterium Polaribacter sp. MED152 (Flavobacteria).
Analysis of marine cyanobacteria and proteobacteria genomes has provided a profound understanding of the life strategies of these organisms and their ecotype differentiation and metabolisms. However, a comparable analysis of the Bacteroidetes, the third major bacterioplankton group, is still lacking. In the present paper, we report on the genome of Polaribacter sp. strain MED152. On the one han...
متن کاملGenomic Makeup of the Marine Flavobacterium Nonlabens (Donghaeana) dokdonensis and Identification of a Novel Class of Rhodopsins
Rhodopsin-containing marine microbes such as those in the class Flavobacteriia play a pivotal role in the biogeochemical cycle of the euphotic zone (Fuhrman JA, Schwalbach MS, Stingl U. 2008. Proteorhodopsins: an array of physiological roles? Nat Rev Microbiol. 6:488-494). Deciphering the genome information of flavobacteria and accessing the diversity and ecological impact of microbial rhodopsi...
متن کاملGenomics of the proteorhodopsin-containing marine flavobacterium Dokdonia sp. strain MED134.
Proteorhodopsin phototrophy is expected to have considerable impact on the ecology and biogeochemical roles of marine bacteria. However, the genetic features contributing to the success of proteorhodopsin-containing bacteria remain largely unknown. We investigated the genome of Dokdonia sp. strain MED134 (Bacteroidetes) for features potentially explaining its ability to grow better in light tha...
